QUESTION 7: I want to know if Islam prohibits me to touch my husband or vice versa, whenever we perform ablution. I ask this question because my husband tries to avoid any contact with me when he performs ablution; even if my hand, mistakenly, touches his body, he performs another ablution. Kindly, explain this issue in the light of the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W)?
ANSWER : Touching, shaking and any other contact with one's wife other than intentional physical romance, sexual Intercourse or discharge as a result of the action does not render one's ablution invalid. Some people misunderstand the Qur'anic verse in Suratul Al-Ma'idah verse 6 which says:
لَامَسْتُمُ النَّساءَ
Ye have had contact with women
Islamic scholars have given the meaning of this Qur'anic verse as sexual Intercourse, not mere touching. There were instances where the Holy Prophet (S.A.W) kissed his wives while he was in a state of ablution and never performed a new ablution as a result of that. So tell your husband that mere touching or kissing does not invalidate ablution.
